Okay, I am restocking my 33 gal tank. I have bought 4 Jewel cichlids (juveniles) and I already have 5 kuhlies in the tank. I am a loach fan, and I saw these awfully pretty looking juvenile skunks. I want to add a small school, but I have heard they can be very vicious.

My question, therefore is, will skunk loaches hurt kuhlies?

I also heared that Skunk Loaches are a bit vicious & may chase some fish, but i'm not 100% sure.

As long as the kuhli's have plenty of places to hide they should be ok. Mine only ever come out at feeding time or at night so it depends how active they are really.
I think skunk loaches are more likely to have disagreements with the cichlids if anything....

Yes, they do...]:| I have 2 skunks and 2 kuhlis, the skunk chased my poor little kuhlis out of their cave, and that is when I first introduced them to my kuhlis.] They nipped the other fish in the tank (my mollies and platies),] and do a clicking sound when they nipping. They are very aggressive and I immediately returned them to my LFS and I changed them to synodontis eupterus (sp.?) and i add more money for the 2 synos... here’s a link below for more info.

I would have never thought any fish would have cause to chase a poor little kuhli! Does anyone know what would make them do it? It's just kuhlis are so non-threatening .... I would have happily put two such fish togehter, thanks for the info ronn!

FYI. I didnt get the skunks coz they were too small and too pricey. I got some really aggressive cichlids instead and moved the kuhlies out.

Maybe next time, wen I see some bigger skunks.

My experiences with skunk loaches...

As long as they are in a larger aquarium, that has fish that is larger than they are, then the skunk loaches do fine. If you have them in a tank that has smaller cave dwelling fishies then the skunk loaches get very nippy and agressive, especially during feeding time.

I started off with a couple in a small tank to take care of the snails, which they did an excellent job but the other fish paid for it dearly. I even upgraded their tank and put them in a 75g, but were very mean to the angelicus loaches and cories (or whatever else came near the food during feeding time).

Now they are in a 90g, with large severums, firemouth, 9" royal plec, large dojo, large rope fish and now they behave themselves because everything is much bigger than they are and the tetras stay up higher in the tank....

They are a great fish and a great snail eater but you just have to be careful of what type of aquarium you put them in, as far as my experience goes anyway... I have like 6 now for quite awhile. HTH

and by the way... they don't get very big at all....
