I know a good store that has them (and isn't Walmart), but they never have them in stock. I went by there today looking for them but the guy said one person bought all they had. They won't share! |

I hope I will be sharing in your panda joy next week - LFS says they are getting some in so I wrote my name down for 5 of them. I am glad I passed up the Julii cories at the other LFS. They were even having a B1G1F sale. But after I looked closely, they were quite raggedy - as though they'd had their fins chewed on. I've never had pandas before - they are so cute in the pictures! |

Pandas tend to be fairly fragile and sensitive to water changes if they're shipped before they're at least 16 weeks old. Preferably 20 weeks. After 20 weeks, they can handle reasonable shipping stresses, but before 16 weeks they're not equipped to take it. Which is why I never offer any Panda juveniles to anyone else until they're 20 weeks old, even if they're only being offered to someone local whose aquaria have much the same water. Once past 20 weeks, they're surprisingly good at resisting transport shock. Before 16 weeks, they travel VERY badly. Size isn't necssarily a reliable indicator. You can have specimens younger than 16 weeks that have grown in a large aquarium look bigger than 20 week old ones that have grown in a more modest nursery. A BIG danger sign to look for is the fish shedding body mucus in white strings. If they do that, they're probably shocked beyond recovery. Although this can also happen with older Pandas if they're in water that's outside their pH range. Check your pH and other parameters BEFORE acquiring them, ideally do a water change and gravel vac on the day, then test parameters to make sure the tank is nice and stable. Spend 2 hours or so acclimatising them to be doubly sure. If your Pandas go belly up after that, chances are they were too young to be shipped. |
