"I've seen 'em around here for $50-80 -- I have yet to see one run as high as $100. California, however, seems to be unusually well stocked with tropical fish. "

Not anymore, they're not. I work with different California hobbyists on a daily basis. How long ago was this? Only 6 months ago, we could sell zebras for around 80 bucks full grown. However, now, even neptune holds them wholsale for 150 bucks. I've been working with John Brecken and several other hobbyists from the San Fran and Sacremento area (like you said, CA is well stocked; LA seems to have a plethora of such specialist hobbyists, at least moreso than San Dieog) for quite a while and even they can no longer find fish under 100 (purchased my trio full grown for 75 each before the belo monte project was announced).

Because the belo monte dam area is to be deemed a national park, thus no wildlife can be taken from the xingu.

By the way, the ones on aquabid are tank raised. So no worries about them being taken from their natural habbitat.

Im pretty sure that Brazil has stopped all export on them and they're building a dam on the river there from. I thinks its best now to only buy them if you are serious about breeding them.

Well, there are some available on Aquabid. If you search for "Zebra Pleco" you get a listing for 2 available. 1 is selling for 136 and the other 111. Then if you search "Zebra Plecos" you get a trio of them for like 350. If anyones interested it's one of the few places you can actually find them.

what were the prices like a year ago? i know for some wild caught fish, like clown loaches, the cost changes according to when they breed in the wild. lower prices during breeding season.

That's worrisome. I gather they're still hard to breed, so it suggests that their supply in the wild is running low. It may be our duty NOT to buy them.

Same. On our availability lists last year, they'd be about $50 (and we'd sell them for $80-90). Nowadays, if they are even on the lists, they cost about $100 and we'd sell them for about $150

$100 is a good price these days. Even if you do not really want them, you could buy them anyway and then just sell them again for about $150 each and make some money.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Well come to find out this guy is an absolute sheister. I talked to him today and he sold all three to one person who wanted to buy all three. He apparantly told him he could only sell 2 cuz one was on hold for me and the man then offered him 350 for all 3 so he took it. So no Zebras for me.

Ok, let me start off by saying that I'm not a huge Pleco freak or fan, I've really only kept common plecs in the past. However, I know of a guy within driving distance of me that has 3 1" zebra plecs that he is willing to sell me for $100 U.S.D each. I just so happen to have a spare 15 gallon tank open at the moment as well. What do you all think?

Just to clarify, what I meant is he has 3 fish available. All three are 1 inches long and he is selling them for 100 each. So I can get 1 for 100, 2 for 200 etc.

I'll have to ask him if he will give me a price cut if I buy all three. I have to call him and talk to him about it tonight when he gets home from work.

Anyone know how hard these are to breed and how many fry are produced for an average clutch?

I think he meant $300US for 3 one inch Zebra's. Still OK, as if they growout with you , you'll double-triple your money/if you sell? and not breed. Show him $250 cash first and see if he bites. Go for it.

Not a bad price at all, considering that you get to see the fish first.

Wow good for you... three for $100 is cheap! They are only an inch long but still! I would go for it, especially since you can go pick them up even. Good luck! Show us pics!

That's a good price. Go for it.

I am planning to buy 2 from abroad for US$150. Hope the deal will go through soon.
