I'm just curious as to why Zebra Plecs are so hard to find in the US? Are they still illegal to import?

Not import, I believe there is a local ban on exporting fish from their area. With this being so, the U.S. isn't the only country affected by the zebra pleco shortage. Captive bred fish are out on the market, but production is still slow. I understand that young zebra plecos take a long time to grow out to a sellable age.

I wouldn't bother with Zebra Plecs; their price doesn't make them much worth it anymore. Back in the day when they were cheaper it was all right, but now that their prices have skyrocketed I'd leave the Zebras to actual breeding attempts so that the price can go down. Of course, some people may just want people to be impressed with the cash they can shell out for a fish, but really, some of us cheapos just want a good-looking fish for cheap. That being said, other Hypancistrus species look just as awesome at a fraction of the price.

dont ever remember these things being cheap even for fish standards. the way i look at fish price is what size tank could i buy instead lol. in short though the reason prices are where they are is simple supply and demand. supply got shortened so price goes up till people dont pay it. this fish is not worth the sticker on it at any time. its a pleco and there are far to many other choices to look at for far less.

Limited numbers of exports are currently (or were--the catching season is over) being shipped to areas around the world for "research" purposes, and are being sold at ridiculously high prices; over 350, now in most areas.
