My 29g is just coated with brown and hair algae seemingly over night. I put some otos in there but they just hid in the corner away from the paradise fish and only cleaned 1 rock.

29g tank
1 johanni cichlid
1 paradise fish
4 yoyo loaches
2 unknown power filters.. i think 1 is marineland, but I do know both were rated for a 20g tank.

What are some more agressive algae eaters or those that wouldn't just hide out? My cichlid seems to have a grudge against plants so my attempt to just heavily plant the tank failed miserably.

A CAE could be in there for a while, as well as one of the larger plecos. They are both robust fish and would most likely be okay in your tank.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Bristle nose pleco's are pretty good. They are also good with plants. I believe I have heard that Chaestoma's are pretty good as well but I'm not 100% you'll have to research them.

Both of the above suggestions are a bit too docile to hold it's own against a johanni, not to mention the rubberlips just really aren't THAT great of algae eaters. IMO, a SAE would fit relatively well in your tank---a bit overcrowed, but good enough.

IMHO SAE are a bit docile for that tank, require being in a group (like any other schooling/shoaling fish)and get a good 6" in length.

IME nothing bothers BN, but then agian, johanni are very aggresive!!!!

CAE or flying fox should work. I would risk a BN personally, being armoured, they are pretty hard to kill

I guess we can only suggest things. it's up to you to experiment. choose what you like the most and see if it works

I have to agree with Fish_Tank. I keep two BN in with two Crenicichla Marmarota pike cichlids and they do fine.

Plecos are cool but crap like crazy. I like my CAE's because they can hold their own and don't make a mess.

I'll have to go tomorrow and see what they have. There were some flying fox last time. For plecos they normally only have common plecos but on one occasion they had zebras. Can never tell what the lfs will happen to have.

All LFS have bristlenose plecs....well, i should hope all LFS have them

anyway, if you can't get bristlenose (which would be my 1st choice) try get a flying fox, or a CAE

good luck

CAEs in a 29 gallon? No thanks. Stick with the BN, I guess---or look for SAEs, which are far more common. Flying foxes, IME, stop becoming useful once they hit about 4", and they stop eating algae almost all together---and will, instead, chase around other fish like crazy.

Never saw a bn till today. It must be pleco month lol. Normally your lucky to see a common pleco. Today they had royals, spotted sailfin, and bn both dark and albino. There was also a tank labelled misc algae eaters which I'm guessing were cae with albino and dark. So which pleco would work best? I know nothing about plecos so I'm going to have to go look them up now. I also have a 55g I can move it too eventually so size isn't a huge concern.
