Just curious, does it have to be a fish that eats snails?
I know that some fish just like snails, but it's up to the individual fish to an extent. Just because a fish is supposed to eat snails, doesn't mean they will (and vice versa).

Why not try using a piece of lettuce or other veggie? Or some other method to remove the snails?

I have snails in my tanks, but at lower levels. I just pull them out when I see any and give them to my puffers.

I've heard that some kinds of gouramis will eat snails, but I'm not sure what they were. It might have been blue gouramis, maybe someone else can confirm this or set me straight.

Female bettas do a great job of maintaing the snail level in a tank- they unlike males, enjoy the company of one another so don't hesitate to get 3+

Thanks Clownygirl, I do know that Clown Loaches/ Zebra Loaches eat snails, but they do not suit a 2.5 foot tank. They will out grow it. He is after something that does not grow too large and not to have to return it. Thanks again.

Zebra loaches are as interested in snails as clown loaches. I have a tank with 9 clowns and 2 zebras and I have go asking folks every week for snails that they want to give away. I actually found an aquarium owner with a tank infested with lots and lots of snails and guess what, I go see him every week.

Some people don't like the idea of trading in pets. Clown loaches are very entertaining, and have personalities of their own. I know I'd feel bad if I traded in a pet just because it was too big. I wouldn't buy a great dane, just to trade it in when it got too big.

This friend of mine is a bit hopeless. He tied to get rid of the snails by hand, picking them out. But he didn't get them all and they bred in the tank. He isn't much of amaintenance kind of guy. He tied some snail rid stuff from the LFS and killed some of his Tiger Barbs ] (Which he didn't mentioned to me that he had) So the next step is some sort of fish. Keeping in mind he has Guppys, swordtaild and now I found out some Bristlenoses.
The LFS tied to talk him into a Clown Loach. But I talked him out of this (hopefully) as his tank is too small and the loach would be lonely unless he has at least 3 others.

I need a bottom feeder/s that will get rid of a snail population that a friend of mine has. In his tank he has Guppys and Swordtails. Tanks size is around 2.5 foot.
Any recommendation. Will corys eat snails?.

Fiddler crabs won't be able to catch any live, healthy fish other than livebearers (because they are quite possibly the least intelligent fish in the world).

I have fiddler crabs in my tank, and they never shown aggression to any of the fish. And I have small corys and tetras as well, the corys sometimes sitting right in front of the crabs.

Also, at least with the males, they are virtually harmless to fish even if they did attack them. Their large claws are extremely weak, and I let the ones at work pinch me all the time to show people that they aren't dangerous.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Thanks guys/girls, I don't think these loaches are available in Australia though. I've only seen Clown Loaches (tank too small) Hillstream Loaches and the Weather Loach, Kulli Loach. Would Rainbow Sharks eat snails?. Or any small fish like Rams etc.

Cories won't eat snails, and crabs will eat fish. I agree, go with some smaller loaches. Make sure your friend adds a good number of loaches, they're happiest in shoals.

I wouldnt use crabs, they will catch and eat guppies, as guppies sleep on the bottom and crabs are nocturnal. I would recommend one of the Botia Species to clean this problem up. Go for a Yoyo Loach, Queen Loach, Polka Dot Loach, Zebra Loach, any of the smaller loach species would be good. Avoid Weather Loaches and Skunk /Red Tail Blue Botia's. Very aggressive skunks are, and Weather loaches just get too large for a smaller tank like that.

i have used fiddler crabs to eat small snails, some times they would eat them, some times they would not. The draw back to using fiddler crabs is that i watched one grab a guppy and kill it, then eat it. so i would not recommend them if there are small fish in the aquarium. this was only one accorance, ive had these crabs before and never had problems. good luck
