i am not sure if this is the right place for this topic but i have a question about catfish.

i was reading the thread on most epensive fish. people were using a system to name there catfish that had an L than a number.

can someone explain this system to me?
I assume it is used so every for on plecos(i think it is only for them) has an original name because the scientific names can describe more than one variety. also, do they use this for any other types of fish.

any info on this is apreciated

The L system is used for plecos. At one time they were discovering new species too fast to give them scientific names so they just gave the an L-number. Every plec has a L-number. The cories have a similar system but it never really caught on.

i think "L" stand for a particular family of catfish called
LORICARIIDAE this group contains BN(bristole nose) and pelco and a few others so i think thats what L stands for though i've never heard some one use that term

L numbers are a system of identification for Loricariid species that have yet to be identified officially by scientists. There is no correlation between the number and the genus the fish belongs to (for example, L203 and L204 might be very different, distantly related species).

A similar system is also used for temporarily naming Callichthyids. These fish are called "C numbers".

Every plec has a L-number.

This is untrue. Only species that have not been scientifically described have L numbers. Once an L number is described, its number becomes invalid. For example, using the term L046 to refer to the zebra pleco is considered incorrect. The species is now known as Hypancistrus zebra.

L numbers are used for loricariids that have yet to be identified by science, or rather, blessed with a scientific (binomial nomenclature) name. Originally started by a German hobbyist magazine, it has now been adopted by many different associations. Once a species is given a scientific name, the L number is no longer valid and is considered "retired".

EDIT: damn, nat beat me to it :/
