These spines are typically used when the fish feels threatened, such as when they are being handled. I know I've been stabbed by a clown loach, and it hurts! |

I havent seen a dead clown loach(yet, thankgod) but i have read alot of stories on how their clowns had died with their spines out. Personally, I feel that they put them out before they die for protection, and they are just left out when the fish passes away |
