Both stay small. Clown pleco usually refers to a panaqolus species which is what I have and probably what you have. [link=http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/panaque/734_F.PHP]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/panaque/734_F.PHP" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]

The other that I've seen get called a clown pleco is a peckoltia species. [link=http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/peckolti/75_F.PHP]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/peckolti/75_F.PHP" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]

The only difference I know that might be important is panaque species need wood and otherwise eat herbivore foods while peckoltia are more meat eaters.

Mine aren't very nocturnal either provided they have enough hiding places and feel safe. They are very skittish but are equally that way day or night. The more hiding places and wood chunks I give them the more I see them. As long as they are within 4" of a hiding place they'll sit still for me to look at but if I try to get close while they are in the big open spot all I get to see is their tail as it dissapears.

Despite his size in the past month I haven't seen much more than the tip of my royals tail sticking out from under the big driftwood except the 1 day I fed out a mango.
