Under p punctatus, the second link?

A better question is; where does it say trinidad plecostomus anywhere in the first?

I suppose there is a bit of leeway when it comes to common names, but whatever suits you.

pardalis pterygoplichthys is what most commons are in oz, and these are bred here (somewhere in North-West NSW) and I've seen in one batch major difference in colour. Mine have plenty of wood to chew on and are feed wafers, and are very dark, where as the ones that were growing up in the lfs in bare tanks had almost white running through there pattern.

I know human beings and fish can co-exist peacefully.

I have yet to see a reliable source which states that h punctatus is known as the trinidad plec (and remember; "PC is never wrong!" ), but whatever. You're right, though, common names are quite confusing.

H punctatus is known as a trinidad pleco just as your Pterygoplichthys punctatus. Just another reason for not using common names.

In case you've never caught on to internet lingo, *(word)* is used somewhat in the same effect as quotation marks. It was utilized in affirming that no other fish is commonly known by "trinidad plecostomus" minus, of course, said fish. Thus, your original supposition of H punctatus as being grouped under that common name is, in a word, false.

i went to the lfs to get a pleco for 2 different tanks. (this was over like 2 trips, and 2 different weeks.) [so must be from different shipments] n.e way i just put them in the samle tank, and after a few moments of fighting, they calmed down. they look very different. there patterns arent the same either. they came from the same tank, and both under common pleco. could they be different types of pleco, or just look different.

also is a trinidad pleco a common pleco.

Actually, they are, albeit ocassionally. If you recall, P. pardalis is listed at only 10". However, they are not in this case.

here is h. punctatus:

Best check your sources twice .

No. The *true* trinidad pleco is pterygoplicthys punctatus.

Yes, it depends on what common pleco you're talking about. Hypostomus punctatus is called a trinidad and common pleco while pardalis pterygoplichthys is also called a common pleco. Both are very similar though.

Actually, they do not. Hypostomus punctatus is a species of "common" pleco. It is, in fact, mislabelled, as so many of their fish are.

A trinidad pleco is not a "common" pleco, although, depending on which species, they may be of the same genus. *true* Trinidad plecos are actually quite pricey, and are unlikely to found in your average LFS.
