I have two false julii cories in a twenty gallon tank. I realize they would be happier if I had more, and I hope to get some more soon, but I thought it might be nice to spice up my life a little and get a different variety. Do different types of cories get along with each other, and if so, will they be happy in schools made up of different varieties, or do they prefer schools of their own type?

Yes, Corydoras like to school with other Corydoras of the same type.

Different species will get along just fine with each other, but Corydoras prefer their own kind. These fish are extremely social and will make the best of the situation if they're forced to house with other types, but again, cories fare best in schools of their own species.

Would a school of 3-4 of the same type be happy? I realize it is ideal to have 6 or more, but I just don't think I have room right now.

a school of 4 is better than the pair of 2, so yes it is better, though definately not ideal

And yes, other corries will school together nicely, I know my wild and crazy bunch sometimes stick with their own and other times just play cory pile and don't care...today i even caught one of my habrosus swimming around in mid level pretending he was a neon tetra (where's the camera when you need it right?)

heidi

to prove the point, here's a pretty good pic, though the other night would have been better with almost 40 hungry piglets within 2 square feet of each other munching down

While it is better to have a single group of one type, different types of cories will school together... it's not ideal however.

Like heidi, I have a very mixed school. I fully INTENDED to have one school of one type of cory... I wind up saving the "lonely" cories left alone at my LFS, however. Figure they're better off in my tank with other cory buddies than all alone in the LFS. *shrugs*

In any case, I wouldn't deliberately run out to get a mixed school unless I couldn't find anymore of the cories I had in the first place.

Can't find any pictures... I'll grab one tomorrow morning if I can...
