i was just wondering if corys were good fish and what it would take to keep them. i have a 50 gal tank with the following inhabitants-
4 glowlight tetras (soon to be six)
2 pristella " " (again soon to be 5 or 6)i get paid on tuesdays!!
10 neons
3 rummy noses
3 BNs soon to be 1 male, 1 female (instead of 3 males)
3 clown loaches (wont let me increase their school size. they killed the last one i added)

do i have too many bottom feeders to add a few corys>> they seem so cool. wats a cheap, good hardy cory to keep?

tell me everything!! please

Ok so you're going to fill out the schools of tetras, that's good.

Having a variety of bottom feeders usually isn't a problem. I have cories and otos in one tank; kuhlis, queens and in BN in another, etc. I've not kept clowns because of their potential large size so I'm not sure, is a 50g large enough for them?

Cories are active, interesting to watch, good scavengers. I have pandas, which are a bit smaller and can be sensitive. Pygmy cories, very tiny. [link=Peppered cories]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/pepper.xml" style="COLOR: #FFFFC0[/link] I've kept in the past and seemed hardy. My favorites are [link=three-lined cories]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/trilineatus.xml" style="COLOR: #FFFFC0[/link]...they seem to be the most active of the cories I've kept, and I like how they look.

This is cory afternoon nap time

I don't know how well they'll do with clowns...large botias tend to be boisterious and aggressive (during feeding time), and may therefore spook and outcompete the cories. Besides, a 50 gallon is too small for clownies.

Cories are excellent fish to keep. Most species are pretty hardy, they don't produce much waste are very peaceful, and they clean up leftover food.
The only problem with cories in your tank is the presence of the clown loaches. If they killed another of their kind, they would probably harass or bother the cories, and hog all of the food. Besides, the clowns will grow too big for your tank, anyways. I would try to return/sell the clown loaches, then get a nice shoal of cories.

A couple of people have already mentioned how clowns won't fit into your tank, but just FYI they will get along with cories.

They'll plow through cories who don't get out of their way, but won;t intentionally bother them.

it might not be intentional, but i reckon the clowns would bother the cory's. Theres no way if i put cory's in my tank that the clowns would let them have any of the food.

How big are your clowns? Most people only have very small clowns and if you are one of those people, then don't worry about your current tank size - your clowns will be quite happy in there. Once they get up to the 4" - 4.5", then you'll have to upgrade your tank.

I currently have 4 in a 50 gal tank. Only one of them is any big (3.5in) and he only grew after I last upgraded my tank 2 months ago. I think I'll be upgrading again June next year.

my clowns are about 2.5 inches long. and they dont fight over food as i break up some algae discs and spread them out over the tank so all my fish (the tetras like em too) can have some. im not too sure whether it was the clowns who killed the other clown, the only reason i thought it was that they woke me up at a bout 2 in the morning as i heard a clicking noise, ive since found out it has something to do with their teeth. and one clown seemed to be nipping the other. i was sooo tired and knew i shudda moved it but by the morning it was dead and all mattered.
