within the last several weeks, my closest petsmart has been recieving eel looking creatures called "dinosaur eels" of course, the employees are not quite sure what they are.

what are they? how big do they get (theirs are around 3", what do they eat?

Cheers.

I dont think they stay 3"... probably 12+" try looking up Polypterus palmas, i believe this is the fish associated with the name "dinosaur eel," maybe not that specific species because fish stores are bad about that labeling stuff, but its definitely a bichir

cool fish, i've never even seen one in person before so its cool your fish store has them! but i think need relatively big tank if I'm correct

Polypterus senegalus senegalus....the Senegal bichir, poorly labelled as 'Dinosaur Eel' by Petcos and Petsmarts.

My husbandry article on them: http://aquatic-hobbyist.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3362

thanks for the quick replies!! i rooted around using your leads, and it does appear to be a bichir of sorts.

good thing i am not into impulse buying. they are only $5.99 and look really cool. unfortunatley, i do not have a large enough species tank for one of them.

is petsmart trending towards loaches/eels as of late? the one here now carries dragonfish, peacock eels, weather loaches (including the golden), dinasaur eels, and kuhlis. they range in price from $1.49 to $11.99. good prices if you know what you are buying.
