i have a 50 gallon and it's beginning to grow a good amount of algae. I'd rather not get a common pleco being that i don't have room for one, and would appreciate a good sized algae eater that would live happily in a 50 gallon permanantly. if not, any other suggestions?

Well I have a little 1.5" rubberlip in a 10g and he has cleared all the algae and a 4" guy in the 55g and he has cleaned it up pretty good!! Plus my big guy is quite the character to watch! You could also go with a bristlenose, supposedly they eat it better, but mine have eaten all of it too.

I don't know anything about Rubberlipped Plecos, but I do know that, if your algae is a hairy, reddish-brown type, the Bristlenose Pleco is one of the few that will eat that. I had a BN that eradicated my tank of both that kind of algae as well as the green algae that I usually find on the sides of my tank -

Rubberlipped plecos are pretty fair algae eaters, and one will probably keep your tank nice and clean. However, bristlenose plecos are even better at eating algae. They can keep large tanks completely algae-free, and have lots of character in my opinion. Those bristles really make them attractive to me.

I have one three inch striped rubernose pleco in my 29 gal tank, and except for one bloom early on I've never even seen algae in there he keeps it so clean. He (petey) goes after the rocks and glass like crazy. I also have a few black mollies in there. They take care of the stuff on the plants, and help petey with the rocks.

They would prefer other forms of vegetation, but yes, they do eat algae quite well.
