there are lake tanganyikan eels out there, they might work, but why not a fire eel for now, and move it when it gets big.

A dojo should be fine. I have kept them with many different Lake Malawi cichlids in the past, without any problems. I can't fully remember, but I believe I have kept them with yellow labs.

As for other eels, the Lake Tanganyika eels will work just fine. I have never really been interested in the eels, but have seen many a Malawian tank with the Tanganyika eels in them.

Even though the yellow labs are Mbuna, I have always (and everyone I know) fed mine a rounded diet of "normal" foods. Not just veggie foods. In fact the only fish I have ever given a staple diet of veggie foods, was my tropheus. All the other fish, including all my Mbuna, always get TetraPro Crisps. And I even fed them frozen brine and freeze dried plankton on occassions (about once a week). I never had any problem with them on this diet. Now not all I know of feed the same thing I do, but they do feed a more rounded diet, than a veggie diet.

I suspect your Eel will be strictly carnivorous, so "Malawi Bloat" won't be a problem for that particular fish, unlike the Cichlids. Your problem, rather, will be ensuring that your Eel gets enough of the animal-based food it will probably need, without your Cichlids snapping it up and propelkling themselves toward "Malawi Bloat". An interesting exercise that should tax the mind a fair amount - and a problem that you should devise a solution for in advance before launching into this particular fish mixture, in order to save expensive heartache later.

Among the Eels you can look out for that are found in the Rift Lakes is Aethiomastacembelus ellipsifer, a Tanganyikan species. It's likely to be pretty rare, though, and probably a special order species. Go hunt whatever info you can find on its requirements before committing yourself to a potentially very expensive purchase!
