im guessing that i need to punch holes in the top of the jar so the algae can survive

also,do i need to boil the rock first to ensure that no pollutants are transferred to my tank??

ehhh for algae rock...
you get a jar, put a piece of rock in there, fill with water, let it sit next to a window with sunlight, wait a few weeks, till the rock is covered in algae "fur" then use that rock to feed your algae eaters.

I just looked it up. Yeah, the L-117 is a Hyp., not a gold nug.

As in, caved in. Also, I didn't know that the L-117 was a gold nugget. Maybe you're mislabeling it. In any case. Gold nugs like a little protein in their diet. Try weaning it on bloodworms first.

i definetly have enough algae in the tank but my plec just sits on the same side of this log i have

this might sound kinda stupid, but how do you start an algae rock?? do you just leave some lettuce on it or something until algae starts to grow??

rofl,i took a rubber band and tied some lettuce to a plastic spoon

Zuccini all the way. Also some will eat shrimp pellets. Hey, if it falls to the bottom of the tank it's fair game!

I'm so adjective, I verb nouns!

It definitely depends on which kind of plec. For most of the larger end species, you'll want to increase the protein in their diet as they get older, i.e. blood/black worms, pellet, and brine shrimp (i don't know how well the plec'll fare trying to outcompete it's tankmates with that mouth. Keep a steady flow of fresh greens going, though. Some plecs relish meaty foods (zebras), while others are primarily herbivorous (BNs). Like I said, it's highly variable.

Most plecs also love eating live foods like brine shrimp and tubifex worms. I was feeding some live brine shrimp to a BGK today, and the otos in the tank were going crazy over them!

The poor BGK barely got any...

my common used to eat lettuce, so I'd think yours would like it too. Def try to get zuchini or cucumber, your plec will love you for that

EDIT: oh and maybe try cultivating your own algae rock if you don't have a ton of algae in the tank?

Cucumber and zucchini worked the best for me when I had one. You can either tie it to a rock with a rubber band or use a plant weight to make it sink (I do the latter).

I think that most plecos will eat veggies, like cucumber, zucchini, etc. I don't know about lettuce, but you could give it a try!
