I don't know whether he is just a loner or what, but for my first tank, a 10 gallon, I only bought 1 cory (being the novice I was haha) and he is just as active as the ones I have in a school of 6 in my 29 gallon! maybe I just lucked out or something, but he has never seemed unhealthy or stressed and he is the most active and playful fish in my 10 gal

and I forget if somebody already said this, but if you're concerned about overstocking then maybe the bronze cory isn't the one to choose... you should check out a smaller species

actually, Janna, i'm postponing the cories for a bigger tank in the future.
although i don't think the stocking "limitation" is true, aspecially for schooling fish and peaceful fish, i don't want to have confined fish.

1* 4" fish <> 4* 1" fish

Jaylene, cories don't eat algae.

While bronze cories are hardy, they just get too big. There are other hardy species that don't get so large.

Pete, are you sure those cories aren't Brochis splendens? All the B. splendens I've seen have been much larger than bronze cories, and they do look similar.

I highly reccommend Bronze Corys considering they are very hardy and they clean up alot of excess waste and are good to cut down algae. I've had 4 bronze corys in a tank with lots of very active fish, and they were as happy as can be!

Bronze corys are definetly the one I would think of as the hardiest of corys. They seem to do good no matter what!
Janna- I have seen bronze corys in the LFS's display tank that have to be 4 going on 5 inches. They are a breeding set of 6, 3 males 3 females, and the females make the 3 inch males look tiny!
*Makes mental note to take some pictures of display tank in fave LFS*
His blind cave tetras are massive too! Mine you, everything he has in that tank is big, even his hillstream loaches!

Fry isn't concerned about overstocking. If he was, he wouldn't be doing that little "experiment."

I wouldn't get bronze cories. They are one of the larger species, getting about 3 inches long. I'd get 6 skunk cories. They are hardier than most of the smaller cories, although they do get a bit bigger.

my tank will be very highly populated by the time i finish it (i'm experimenting with different fish combinations), and i was asking myself why not to have a real bottom feeder, and see how it handles the guys from above?
the problem is, as i said, that i'll check the limits of my system.
how few cories can still function? how few of them have to be present to show group behavior?
i'll probablly go with bronze cories, unless you have other ideas..

If it is a tank under 25 gallons, only get one barbatus cory (they are now known as Scleromystax barbatus), as they are territorial towards each other, especially when breeding.

or get 2-4 Barbatus (I think they have changed name now but am unsure, they grow larger than normal Cories therfore are happier in smaller groups

The smaller corys are often less hardy, being that they'll be on the bottom where all the waste accumulates I'd suggest against them. Is this the same 5 gallon tank that you have a post about?

Corys are active, they need surface to explore. While I've had 2 corys by themselves (took awhile to get something as ordinary as bronze albinos in the shop ) for awhile, they became much more active after the school was increased. I wouldn't suggest 1 cory by itself, but then again I wouldnt' suggest the "experiment" you're attempting. Sure you can stuff 75 (or whatever the record is) college kids in a phone booth, but none of them will be comfortable if they had to live like that for the rest of their lives.

^_^

Fry, you could get a group of Pygmy Cories, they're small and only reach about 3cm.

Just a thought.

Like nick said, 6-8 is the ideal number for cories. And they must all be the same type too. More cories=more fun.

Six cories is the absolute minimum for them to be happy and healthy. Any fewer, and the fish would not show as much group behavior, and they would be more stressed than they would with six present.
