I decided on getting some Otos for my Cory tank. Currently I have 6 Peppered Cories in this 10 gallon tank. The tank has been fully set up for almost 5 months.

How many Otos can I add to this tank?

i dont think you could keep any in their. as with 6 cories its overstocked already or real close. and the ottos are sensitive to water conditions

Hmm. What are the dimensions of this 10 gal tank? Only I keep thinking 10 Gal UK, which is pretty substantial - but US gallons are somewhat smaller

If it's a 10g US then no, that's definitely pushing it.

Seriously?

Even going by 1 inch per square foot, I have about 4.5" left. Why wouldn't 2 Ottos fit in there? I understand they are a little sensitive, but this tank is completely cycled so that shouldn't be a problem.

Dimensions are 20" x 10" x 12", just a standard US 10 gallon.

I agree, but that's true with any small tank, not just this one.

I saw you started a thread about people just wanting algae eaters when they really don't need them. I have tried cleaning the sides of my tanks, it really didn't work to well. If I had the time to spend on just scrubbing the sides of my tank I would do it. The way I've tried, takes too long. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can quickly remove the algae?

Is there an easier way to manually remove the algae? I have tried using a scrubbing pad tool that came with an aquarium cleaning kit, but there has to be an easier way. Any help would be great.

Magnetic algae scrapers work great

I was thinking about buying one of those, but I remember someone warning about the magnet pulling sand up and scratching the tank. I really doubt that could happen, but you never know. I guess I would just have to be real careful when I get to the bottom of the tank. For that price, it's worth a try. Heck, 2 Ottos would cost that much.

I wasn't careful and scratched my tank...

It's not a problem if you move it really slowly near the bottom and don't dig around in the substrate

For tough stuff, a razor blade or a credit card are better bets than a magnetic thing, much as I like those - and all three are more likely to work than otos, who prefer softer algae.

Otos are good for cleaning silk plants and decorations. I have a mag float and it works great. I also think the credit card works good too.

Try nylon pan scourers. But DON'T get one with soap infused in it whatever you do!

I use these sponge things from the supermarket with these wiry nylon pads attached. They remove algae a treat from the front glass of an aquarium, and they're soft enough not to scratch the glass.
