Just curious, what's a good tank size for a nice sized group of upside down catfish? And what sort of plants/decor do they prefer?

What would look nice, IMO would be a rock or fake rock surface in the background. Regular dark tan gravel substrate with several large riverstones, huge pieces of driftwood and rocky caves, with anubias planted throughout. I'd wager maybe a 30-40 gallon tank for a group of six. Maybe a trio of congo tetras to go with them as well. Wow, now you've got me in the mood to set up a new tank.

yep something along the lines of what lifenoodles said. I'd have some floating plants on top to keep the light down and maybe some overhangs. Also i'd have dark gravel with the odd large riverstone and lots of pieces of driftwood with anubias attached to it (gotta go with the african theme) and IME USD synos prefer wood over rock. Any size tank over a 30g could get you 4+ USDs. i like the idea of congo tetras to go with the african theme as well and if you weren't in australia, i'd reconmend some west african river cichlids as well.

Just a note - my upside down who I had for YEARS was a solo artist - didn't like any other fish and no one really liked him... he LIVED in an Amazon Sword, and yet never touched my driftwood... bit of a strange fish anyway if you ask me!

I would get a group of maybe 6 in a 55g, a rock cave section on the left and one huge driftwood piece in the middle then an empty space n the right. You can then use the empty space for feeding bloodworm etc. I would then also add a nice group of cichlids like 4-6 Keyhole cichlids and then also a school of Conga Tetras, maybe around 10. I dunno if that would be overstocked but it would be quite cool. Maybe if you had space add 2-4 Featherfins and see what they are like in a group?

That tank is too small and stocked for even a single featherfin.
