i plan on eventually setting up a 44g. pentagon as a community tank. n right now i have 4 panda cories in a 20g that will be moved to the 44g. is a sand substrate ok for panda cories? if not what problems will it cause? i only ask cause ive noticed some species profiles that say that cories shouldnt be kept in a tank with a very fine substrate(sand)

Most cories should do fine in a sand substrate. I've always been told that they actually prefer it. I have cories in my tank with sand and they seem to love it...digging around and playing. I think they should be just fine.

Not sure I've ever seen a profile that said no sand for a cory ...Most corys prefer it as it's easier too play and dig around in...mine like it almost too much .

Nah, that profile had it all wrong. Cories love sand, and prefer it to gravel. Sand is a great substrate for cories, as it will not erode their barbels away.

One thing to note, though. Cories should be kept in groups of at least six, so I recommend adding at least two more panda cories. You will have a bigger tank, so it should be fine.

They will prefer it I reckon as it won`t cut there barbels as easy as gravel might and the sand means they can search for food in it and it harder to move the gravel
