I have had my knife fish for almost two weeks and have not seen him come out of his hiding spot once yet. He hides behind a plant and never comes out til all the lights in my room are out and his tank light is off as well. Is there a way to get him to come out and show himself. i would like to see him every now and then I have dimmed the light in the aquarium. And i do not know what to do or try next. I am not even sure if there is anything i can do to get him to come out.
whats the point of buying a fish if you cant see it?
any help would greatly be appreciated
thanks,
john

let me ask what kind of knife fish is it?

as far as i know, most knife fish are nocturnal animals, coming out and being active mostly at night. there isn't much you can do in terms of forcing him to swim out and about during the day time...that's just how nature works. I wouldn't attempt to make him come out either, that'll only stress him out.

Most, if not all knifes, are nocturnal I believe. Besides that, the fact that you've only had him for two weeks could mean he is still settling in and may be a little stressed.

You should NOT try to force him out of hiding. That is probably the worst thing you could do, it will only stress him out more.

If you don't appreciate a nocturnal fish, you may want to consider bringing him back.

I'd give him some time first. Maybe he'll warm up to you.

I suppose there could also be a problem with your water quality...may be wise to check params just in case. In addition, tank size/mates?

EDIT: What are you feeding him?
