You have a good point. Too bad the people at most LFS's don't help you out with that stuff.

Common names are not always a help when identifying a pleco. There are hundreds of plecos, hundreds of common names, and more than a few plecs that share the same names. For instance, there are at least three "common pleco" species, over a dozen "bristlenose plecos" (also known as "bristlenose catfish", another confusing area), several tiger plecos, and so on. It is easier to use the scientific name or the pleco's L number to identify it, and to research it.

Plecos fighting...not a pretty sight. When my bristle nose were in my 10 gallon, i caught them fighting. The big one was on top of the other ones head, and they were both flaring their spines on their neck and nose!

Colombia has faster flowing, cool streams straight from the melt---and most rubbernoses come from that general area. Venezuelan chaestoma sp are more tolerant of warmer temps. The rubbernoses are comfortable at around 74F and panaque around 78, so 76 is good middle ground.

Okay, here goes. I hope I remembered this correctly:
Rubbernose pleco: 67-71 degrees F
Clown pleco: 75-80 degrees F

I might be off by a degree or two, but you can see the difference in their preferred temp range. Rubbernose plecos like cooler water because they come from mountain streams, which of course have lower temperatures than the rivers and river basins that the clown plecos call home.

EDIT: I guess I was just typing too fast.

I should think that they would be compatible behavior-wise, but they don't mesh when it comes to temperatures. Rubbernose plecos like cooler temps than the more tropical clown plecs, and tend to not do so well when kept in a warm tank.

So what about something like a clown and rubber mouth pleco? Both stay on the smaller side of things.

Yeah, I had some trouble about a month ago. The dominant male completely sucked off both sides of the other male's striping. Since then, he's returned to color quite nicely and with the pecking order established, they're almost constantly hanging out together.

Yeah, I sorta remembered that. I just suggested fewer males because the tank is barely over twenty gallons. I've seen a video of male zebra plecos fighting, it isn't a pretty thing. Who'd have thought that such a small and beautiful fish could be capable of such aggression?

Actually, many people state that in a group of 5, 3 males are optimal, but a large tank is needed for the undertaking, as more males=more mayhem.

Okay, a couple of things. Firstly, plecos aren't schooling fish, and really don't need each others' company. Secondly, several plecos in the same tank means that there is a lot of waste output, which translates to dirty water and high nitrates unless maintenance is stringent. Believe me, I know. I have two plecos in my twenty-nine gallon tank. Thirdly, the plecos you mentioned all need much larger tanks. I don't know if you have been or are keeping them in the twenty-two, but I don't recommend it.

If you are looking for a group of plecos, and that tank is empty, a colony of Hypancistrus plecs would be sweet. Just remember to stick with small ones, such as the queen arabesque. You could have three to five of one species as long as no more than two males were present. They can often be aggressive towards each other, and fight over territory and caves.
