We can use the process of elimination and probability to determine what your little fish is. |

If you see barbels, chances are it's a Corydoras. Some pics from my 2003 spawning that resulted in Lady Emma Hamilton coming into this world courtesy of Mata Hari's relentless urge to breed ![]() Panda Catfish Egg Panda Fry At About 8 Days Old Panda Catfish At About 6 Weeks If you manage to contain a Corydoras fry in a clear container for a short period for observation (advisable NOT to do this for too long to avoid stressing the little fellow) then barbels can clearly be seen. Indeed, small baby Corys can have an almost 'Walrus faced' appearance at first sight when you actually do see the barbels for the first time! Be advised that some species of Corydoras undergo colour changes from fry to adult. The most extreme example being Corydoras rabauti, whose juveniles and adults look absolutely nothing like each other. In the case of my Pandas, they acquire black 'pepper dots' over the body that disappear as adult colouration makes its appearance, presumably to make them harder to detect against gravel (and it works too!). Best feeding régime for baby Corys if you're raising them in a separate nursery aquarium is to alternate between infusoria and liquid fry food. If possible, 4 controlled feeds per day should result in a healthy growth rate, but if you have to feed larger amounts less frequently as a result of work pressures for example, this will also be fine. Be advised however that if you feed heavy amounts of liquid fry food, water changes will be needed more frequently. Hardy species such as paleatus won't mind this, but Pandas can be fussy about their water changes. Some long snouted hillstream Corys (especially if wild caught) need RO water to persuade them to breed, and the first generation fry are probably best given RO water for their water changes too. But you'll only have to worry about this if you become a dedicated Cory nut. ![]() ![]() |
