Hello.
ive been thinking about having an aquarium for like 4 years (ever since i got my own place), Finaly i decided to take the plunge and buy a tank. Well i got a 10 gallon kit tank and have found ive already made a mistake, because ive totaly caught the fish keeping bug and im trying my hardest not to overstock that lil thing. sooo.. more to the point.

Right now ive got 4 zebra danios and 2 ghost shrimp(to hopely manage alittle of the wasted food). Id like some advise on what else to stock. I was thinking that cory's would be a good idea because they seem to stay about 2" but in reading posts it seems id need about 6 for them to happy. any advise. id really like to also get a Coral Blue Dwarf Gourami but i think i need something to manage algae as well and im afraid both just might not be possible. So i guess what id really like is a pretty lil eye catching loner fish, and a janitor.

Ive introduced the fish over three weeks, and ran the tank for three days empty with some barrowed substate from my friends beta. ive also got a couple of lil java ferns in there too

Sorry for such a long post. thought id give a what lil tank history ive got over the past three weeks. anyway thanks for any advise you can give!!

As you know, in a 10 gallon there is barely any room to do ANYTHING. First off though, your danios need to be in a school. You should get 2 more, so there is 6. That is the minimum for a school. There isn't really room for a school of cories in that tank, so I'd get more ghost shrimp. They can help clean up leftover food. For algae, I'd get some amano shrimp and a couple mystery snails. That'd leave you free to get the dwarf gourami . Alternatively, you could get a female betta. They're sweet and colorful with tons of personality.

Congrats on the new tank, and good job for researching before you buy. Welcome to FP.

I agree with Janna partways. Get two more danios, and a couple more ghost shrimp. A dwarf gourami would be a good choice, too. If you want an algae eater, I'd just go with one apple snail, as they do not reproduce asexually. In other words, you won't have tons of baby snails running amok all over your tank!

WOW!! fast responce.. THNKS!!!

So. six danios should be min for a school. ok cool i love the lil danio's. cute and very active. and i hadnt even thought of adding snails because i read they multiply like well.. snails i guess 8-) but with one apple snail that doesnt sound like it will be a problem.

just so i can make sure that im not overstocking

6 zebra danio's
4 ghost shrimp
1 Dwarf Gourami
1 apple snail

Thnks a ton for the info. i think that set up will be a great tank to start out on

Thnks again -CJ

Yup, that'd be good. You can have more ghost shrimp and/or amano shrimp if you like. They don't really add to the bio-load at all.

Won't an apple snail eventually get too large for a 10g?

Ohh yea.. a bigger tank is my plan 8) . but probly not for about 6 months. I think im going to get some practice on the 10g first. but i would really like to have a well planted 40g comunity tank. how long until an apple snail would be to big? is their anyway to control the snails if i have to go with a smaller type?

I read that apple snails lay eggs above water surface and you can just get rid of the eggs. is this true of mystery snails as well?

i really appreciate the help

I agree with your idea, 6 Zebra Danio's, 4 Ghost Shrimp, 1 Dwarf Gourami & 1 Apple Snail are Ok.

Just make regular water changes & take care.
