does anybody know their life span? the lfs people told me they dont live that long, but dont really know how many years exactly. but then he also told me to get a chinese algae eater for a 29 gallon tank because he said they only grow to 6 inches, so i dont quite believe him...

3years? Just a guess. I know at least 2 of mine are 2years old. My orignal pair both lost an eye to a mean paradise fish so I can identify. I also have around 10 of their fry and a few others I've bought.

Ottos are short lived. 3 is considered to be a long, healthy life for these fish.

Someone else I should direct to my article ... Otocinclus Article

At the bottom, you will find that one of my Otocinclus lived to be over nine years old. And the ones I have now are a good 5 years old at least. And show no signs (touch wood) of going to the great aquarium in the sky just yet.

o.o

Wow, that is perhaps one of the few instances in which the lifespans of aquarium raised fish have vaulted over their natural analogues. In the wild, otocinclus are seasonal and rarely live more than the said 3 years. Bravo, Cass /:'
