Brought home 4 baby pandas today. In the store they were a very bright white w/black stripes. They store tank had pure white gravel. In their new home w/light tan and various shades of brown sand/gravel mix the pandas have changed from white to various shades of tan. And it seems that they change when they linger over different shades. I haven't seen this with other fish or cories, except when they brighten and get more rich color from being healthy and well fed. Am I imagining the camo in the pandas???

Never seen this. Though their base colour might be adaptable in this regard, as I have seen them in different shades of the base colour, so to speak. Though in the case of my Pandas, darker individuals are usually male, and usually go somewhat darker when they're gearing up for another Roman Orgy with Mata Hari when she hitches her petticoats and spawns!

The contrast to the extreme white they were in the store is amazing. Thought maybe stress of the move had darkened them but today they're tan, active and munching away. Go to http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/photos/gallery.asp?id=panda_profile where there are different pix from different people, enlarge and notice the differences in hue matching the gravel. Btw Cal, do yours propagate in a community tank? And do any spawn survive?

Panda cories can spawn in a community tank, but I wouldn't bet on the fry surviving. It would depend on the other fish in the tank.

Corys do change their color to suit their substrates. I know this because I used to have black gravel, and a few days after I brought them home, they turned very dark. They looked ugly that way, which is one of the main reasons why I switched my gravel to a much lighter natural shade. Now my corys are a lot more colorful.

BTW: In the wild, most corys come from very light colored sand, so when given that they will show their best colors.

Thanks Natalie, I'm not nuts! Well I am, but I'm not wrong this time! Got 6 emerald greens coming this week. I never knew I loved cories so much. And you're right too, the pandas look their best over the lightest sub...

Spawn in the community aquarium? You bet ... just lately, about once every three days!

Mind you, I had a pleasant surprise last night - check my latest Panda thread for more info!
