BTW: You won't be able to fit them in either of the tanks you have in your signature, just to let you know now if you are looking into getting some.

I have owned normal pictus catfish, as well as arius seemani (columbian shark catfish) no luck with either of those.

Bought a Four Line Pictus Catfish a couple months ago and its doing very well. It hides under the rock caves and wiggles it's tail. At feeding time it comes right out and swims to the back of the tank, where it knows I've dropped some shrimp pellets (fave food) Once in awhile it cruises around the bottom of the tank and visits all the caves.. This is one cool cat.. Max size is 6 inches, it's 4 now.

Pictos cats grow to 10" long, are mainly carnivorous scavengers, and do not tolerate salt.

I think one species of pictus gets around 10inches, the Sciades Pictus. The common silver ones with spots get around 4, 4 and a half inches, and the four lined ones around 6 inches.
Naturally they will eat whatever fits i n their mouth, they are a catfish after all.

I THINK i have one like that. they are so cool to watch and are funny at some times!, they get about...3 and a half inches , they are so pretty!
i only have one tho, but they do better in a "herd" or "school" situation.

Even if u do get 1 that will be FINE!

hope it helps!
Ps- keep us up dated on them if u get some!

I've seen thousands of Pictus cats and not one was under 4" in length. They certainly weren't already full-grown when I saw them. Pimelodus pictus grows to 26.25cm long, that I know.

UPDATE; As it turns out the reason they don't usually grow to full size is do to lack of proper care. AKA Too small of tank, not enough nutrients, bad water quality, etc.

Don't ask where I got this from, I'll at least tell you that I heard it hear, and it was said by one of our more knowledgable members. Then one of this sites mods backed him up. That's all I know.

I'd rather trust the information from the two largest catfish sites on the web...

http://www.scotcat.com/factsheets/pimelodus_pictus.htm

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/pimelodi/pimelodu/276_f.php

And here's one more for you, from Fishbase.

The fact that you said "don't ask where I got this from" makes me immediately question the credibility of your information.

There are many Pimelodid species that look more or less like the pictus cat, but they can grow larger. This is probably what you saw. The true pictus cat (Pimelodus pictus) never grows to more than 5" long.

Unless of course you are talking about total length. Then the measurements will be larger. The method of measurements used for research and scientific sites is standard length, which does not include the tail or other fins.

Standard length is what's listed in books and stuff, and it would be a good habit to use it instead of total length (otherwise it just leads to confusion like this).

The idea of total length is kind of ridiculous to me, as the fins are thin and add barely any mass to the fish. And for comparison, you wouldn't say a guy with a mohawk is 7' tall. That's how I see it...
