i recently purchased a large pleco for my 55 usg. i only wanted one in there so i wanted one that was good sized. i was told he is just a "common pleco" but he doesn't look like my other "common pleco's" he is about 8-9 inches long, has the same body shape and characteristics as the "common" or "golden" but this guy is pitch black, all black with no markings. he is also very passive and doscile. i can rub him with my hand and he doesn't mind at all. he has been in my tank 2 days. is this a "common" or some other kind of pleco?

my foot long common is very quiet. sometimes he goes all day without moving. He can sometimes be as black as night and other times really grey.

well i have two smaller ones in a 29 usg right now that are brown with patterned markings. they seem to be very active and moving alot. that may just be because of the small oscars i have in there growing out. i wasn't sure if the "common pleco" could be all black

There are a whole bunch of plecos that are labeled common.

Some only get up to 16" like the snowking pleco, and some can get up to 2'.

I have a snowking pleco (im pretty sure) and it is very doctile, sometines i think it is dead because it doesnt move, and i dont see it breathing.

Probably a few months up to a year, depends on the stocking on the aquarium.

the body shape is the exact same as the regular "common" and the golden is very close to the same. but yes it is coal black with no design or markings, quite unusual I suppose
