Well just as an expeiriment, I put a slice of cucumber in the tank last night, and sure enough today he was eating it. This stinks that I have to net him out now and return him for what I want......Stupid LFS]:|]:|]:|]:|

Noodles I took the Clown Pleco back to my LFS, and got some Ottos. I did leave a cucumber slice in the first night, and he loved it. I really would have loved to keep him, but I needed an ALGAE eater I wouldn't have been able to care for him properly anyways.

Half? o.o

Uh, yes it is.

One or two mortalities can be shrugged off in the sense that it's more likely that they keeled over from stress than anything else. However, any more than that, and I'd be wary. Panaques and related genera, like C.A. stated, have a tendency of dying on you (usually as a result of starvation). Get those tank lights off, and add a snippet of cucmber or zuchini, and just let them have a go at it.

Don't be too worried... They are very fragile fish when new, and it's not uncommon to lose up to half them you purchased in the first two weeks of them being in your tank. After that, however, they are pretty hardy.

Jessnick, if you have a decent batch, and you've acclimatised them well to a nice aquarium with lots of algae for them to munch on, you could be looking at rearing them for some time ... one of mine lasted over 9 years /:'

Sorry I didn't clarify, I was making a lame attempt at a joke about picking up all they had... I didn't want to leave just 2 at my LFS, I figured i'd keep them all together. They are doing a great job already eating that algae. I gave the LFS a piece of my mind concerning the fact that they have sold me about 4 different kind of fish and have yet to I.D. them properly. *shrugs* Thanks for all the advice everyone, I think the Ottos are going to be great.

Ah, it wasn't 'whoops' over the Otocinclus then?

Yes, Panaque species can get boisterous. And when they do, they're big enough to causse quite a disturbance

What he means by whoops is that, once fully grown, panaques and related genera become fairly territorial. Having kept two royals in a tank over a course of three or so years, I can tell you that territorial squabbles can get VERY violent.

What do you mean 'whoops' ??

5 is a good number. Means they have playmates of their own kind. Which is a good idea with Otocinclus.

Give yourself a pat on the back for being a good boy without realinging it (or girl if that's the 'Jess' half of Jessnick posting )

Yep, otos and BNs are probably the best algae eaters out there.

How many did you get?

This was advertised as a Bristlenose Pleco. Then my wife was told a Candy Striped Pleco (Peckoltia Vittata). Any ideas???

Its definatly a clown plec. Ive owned 2 so far and that is it. They benefit from driftwood, so get em sum and they'll kinda get big like Royal plecs(same family I believe). Not length, sorry, just body mass. Only about 4" in length.

Definitely looks like a Panaqolus species to me. Not least because of those protruding button eyeballs. Which is a feature of Panaqolus species.

If you get to see the mouthparts as it's sucking against the glass, look at the teeth. If they're spoon shaped, you're looking at a wood eater, in which case this also redoubles my view that it's a Panaqolus.

Time to get some driftwood bits so it doesn't develop indigestion!

[Edited because my keyboard keeps throwing up spurious 'z' characters for some reason - will hit it with a hammer if it continues ]

It is definitely not a gold nugget pleco, and it doesn't look like any kind of bristlenose I've seen. Given a choice between clown and candy stripe plecos, I'd say it is a clown pleco. It looks a lot like the ones we have at work. Unfortunately, these guys do not eat algae, and need to have access to driftwood.
