From the FP profile:
Adult specimens will uproot plants.

From the Planet Catfish profile:
When larger, Royal Plecos will re-arrange the tank to their own liking; ensure rocks are well secured and cannot be toppled against the glass.

I found a few other sites through google that said the same thing. Probably confirms what you and I both were thinking

At the very least, the Royal Pleco will destroy the foliage if it doesn't uproot it. Tough teeth, they've got. Java Moss and Riccia are good choices to "plant" a tank with a Royal Plec in it. I haven't tried anything that actually needs to root, though.:%)

I'm gonna have to disagree. I have a royal in my heavily planted tank. He's not quite full grown but he's getting there fast and has done no damage to even the weakest or smallest plants. He travels from a cave to driftwood in a gap I left him and also works his way around the driftwood between the plants to get to the front for food. Just put a little more thought into the plants and leaving room for him to move around.

He was such a cute little thing(in that ugly pleco way ) Except for clogging my filter intake with pleco poop so it kept dying on me and the biowheels would quit turning.

He used to just sit in the driftwood holes and his whole body fit. Then he got a little bigger.

Then only his head fit in the driftwood holes. The filter had to be moved
