my pinapple plec likes to wedge himself in next to the heater, recently I've noticed a large white spot on his head. After careful observation I found this is where his head touches the heater. Why, when it burns him, would my plec choose there as a hiding spot, there are many other spots with better hiding potential and how do I stop him using that spot?

You could always try blocking off the area with some volcanic rock, that may stop him getting to it, or just get him an asbestos suit!

there's already rock in the way, he just swims around it. I'll try moving stuff, I just don't want to block the heater.

If you have the time you could use tank flexible plexi stuff to create a cylinder around the heater, but not in contact with it.As long as it is like divider stuff should not mess with output. Just an idea matey?

temp is 26/27. however I think I've solved the problem, rather than trying to cover the heater, I made it as open as possible so it's not a good hiding spot. it's working at the moment but only time will tell

I've had the same problem. Try putting some sort of current in another part of the tank, or get a heater guard, which may be available at your LFS.

Put more hiding places in.

Once he realizes that there are other hiding places for him where he won't get burned, he'll hide there instead. And a heater guard will be good too, just in case.

Yeah they're meant for cichlids which break heaters. It might work in this case. Might not... I have a rafael that did the same thing. I put a cave in the tank, and he was so used to his spot he didn't find it. So I grabbed him one day and put him in his cave. Hasn't used the heater since.
