for those of you who have the USD syno- S.nigriventris, how many do you have? I wanted to ask this because i can't think of anyone who has a shoal of them. and do you think you would see them more or they'd be happier, if they had more buddies?
cheers

I dont own USD's anymore ,but when I did I started with 3 and then upped it to 6. Still no "schoaling". Maybe a little happier, but no schoaling like the Multis.

I had one, but I lost it during the "extinction" a few months ago.

At one time though, I had three of them, and I didn't notice any difference in behavior. They completely ignored each other and were never together.

I have a feeling that just like the pictus cat, Synodontis nigriventris is a solitary species that can tolerate being kept in groups (but won't shoal or anything).

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I've never owned them, but I can say that from watching them in work tanks I've never seen the fish shoal. They just try to hide all day, using whatever cover they can. Granted, they may have just been stressed by lfs tank conditions, but I figure that would make a shoaling fish shoal more tightly than usual instead of not at all. It seems like upside-down catfish don't really need each others' company.

I have 2, and the only time they interact is when they
are fighting over a peice of food.
I would like to get a couple more but have been unable to find them.

Don't bother peeps. You'll prolly only see "schoaling" if you have a very large group. I've kept many Syno's before, and most are not schoalers. You get lucky and keep them if they all get along. Multipunctatus are you're best chance at schoalers. I even have a couple Oddball Synos that schoal with them. Just personal attitudes with the catfish. Extended living quarters together helps. Also plenty of caves to call their own.
