My yoyo's look like their fighting, but their really not.

The one completly lost his black markings and is the gold color that yoyo's are.

The other one lost some of its color, but not much.

they keep going under the driftwood, then come back out, and keep doing this.. what is goin on here?

Mine chase each other alot but I have never seen any damage. I noticed the color change thing as well. The black markings had faded away alot. When I first saw it I thought it was sick and going to die, but within an hour the color had returned to normal. Mine seem to be faded in the morning or when they have been sleeping in a dark cave for a long time. Then when the come out and are more active the "stripey yoyo" marks reappear.

I've seen some very odd things like this too. I've seen them thrashing around like they're being actively bitten by something. They turn white or even pink. And a few hours later, they're back to normal.. Going off to find the pleco and bother it or something.

I still haven't figured out which of my yoyos are male and female. I read how somewhere....

Yo-Yos tend to be shy. The more hiding places they have the more comfortable they feel. Ive also found that they like larger groups. I prefer to keep them in odd numbers so that if i should lose one it wont break a pair. As for the fading ... mine faded for the first 3-4 months that i had them in the tank after that their markings have stayed. My thinking is that they fade when stressed.

As far as sexing them the females are supposed to have a more pointed snout than males, however i have not been able to tell any noticable difference in mine .. so i may have 5 males or females.

I have 4 yoyos that happen to be 2male and 2female. They paired off and spend most of their time swimming loops around the heater or annoying the cichlids. Mine fade color all the time for various reasons. Add a new fish- fade stripes, add a new plant-fade stripes, clean the cave rock- fade stripes, argue over food.... Mostly it's the one female and occasionally the male she's paired with. They also fade when they show spawning behavior which was only twice and it didn't result in eggs. Still working on that. Stripe fading doesn't seem to be anything to get concerned over but when I moved them from 1 tank to another they got very yellowish and had just smeared black spots instead of stripes. That might be cause for concern.
