They are very cool fish, when in breeding mode the line on the male goes deep deep red, and they dance side by side with the female. They are super fish, resemble little submarines. They're really nifty little fish, and are fun to watch. As an added bonus, they'll nibble algae off of plants, which will help a *little* bit in the perpetual battle against the menace. I would like to note however, the the picture of the bright red pencil is not of a one-lined pencilfish. Note the differences between the fish in the two photos. You can see that the caudal fin patterns are different, and the fish have different numbers of stripes. The bright red fish reminds me of a trifasciatus-type pencil. Six kuhlis in a ten gallon? That's already more than I'd have in there, considering that they reach four inches when fully grown. I'd cut back to four, then perhaps add a small school of cardinal or glo-light tetras. You don't need dither fish, true, but it would look nice to have some balance between the la |

Some are more bold than others, and more colorful, but they'd all be pretty good kuhli loach tankmates. The biggest problem with pencilfish is that they can be hard to find. The most common species are still tough to locate in stores, so you're likely going to have to look pretty hard for some pencils. Good luck though, they're really nice fish. ![]() |

These are dazzlingly beautiful -- the adult males have a glow bright as the stripe of a Glowlight Tetra all over their bodies -- but they're still rare and expensive in the stores. Indeed, with one exception, Pencilfish are both pretty hard to find and regrettably delicate. The exception is the little Beckford's Pencilfish (Nannostomus beckfordi) -- which is both fairly tough and fairly common in the stores. It's also very attractive itself, with the males and females having totally different color schemes. (The males have an endearing habit of swimming up alongside each other and doing a little shimmying dance to Challenge Each Other's Manhood. In fact, during mating two rival males will sometimes get so wrapped up in doing this that they completely forget about the female, who then has to go swimming after them to remind them what all the fuss is supposed to be about.) |
