I say that you have [link=Corydoras melanistius]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/callicht/corydora/311_F.PHP" style="COLOR: #808080[/link]. They're fairly common, and look pretty close to a number of other species. Dvmchrissy, since there are numerous cories that look like Fishyhelper's do, would you be able to take a picture for a firm identification?

I also think that they're Corydoras melanistius & as sirbooks said. There are alot of Corydoras that look like them & it's difficult to identify them.

They look like C. melanistius to me. To be sure though, there is a chance that their patterning may change a bit as they age. You can always post pictures as they grow to see if the i.d. holds up.

I am pretty darn sure they are panda corys I almost bought some of those. . .dang now I kinda wish I did. . .ahh well I have three juliis (rampage (my bro named him), pepperoni, and bubbles) in my ten gallon, (along with my betta, Swimmi) and they are all great, but are they supposed to just sit there like that? If I move something around then they go crazy and they are not completely listless, they do move some throughout the day but is it normal for them to just sit there?

They are a far cry from c. panda; caudual, dorsal, and flank markings are completely different and the head shape is quite off.

NO WAY are those Corys Pandas!

Here is an excellent pic of Pandas. As you can see, they have NO signs whatsoever of small spots along the sides of the body, and differ in having a big black blotch on the caudal peduncle. Furthermore, the black in the dorsal fin does NOT extend into the body in Pandas, which it does in the fish illustrated via the links above.

For comparison, here is an illustration of melanistius which Sirbooks alighted upon as a possible ID. A good deal closer in appearance to fish illustrated at the head of this thread.

To illustrate the confusion possible, here is an illustration of two more Corys, in this case adolfoi and duplicareus, whose markings look similar, but both of these fishes lack the small black spots along the body in the whitish areas.

In the case of this fish, which is Corydoras delphax, the spots on the body are far too large, but most of the other markings are in place.

Finally, here is corydoras brevirostris, which was once classified as a subspecies of melanistius, but which is now considered by some authorities to be a species in its own right.

I could go on and dig up several more illustrations to make the point, but melanistius is just one of several Corys that possess a specific 'template' of markings, with odd variations on the template, which makes the job of pinning down the exact identity quite a task. But I can assure you they're NOT Pandas, because apart from anything else, I've had Pandas for two years, and seen three generations of the little guys blossom forth, and I think I can therefore be relied upon to spot a Panda at 100 paces!
