we just paid a visit to a lfs near us. we asked what loaches would be good to go in our tank with 4 high fi serpae tetras. anyway long story short we ended up with a yellow tail blue botia. he is very sweet, but reading on the internet we have been wrongly advised with size and compatability.

anyone any thoughts, he is currently acclimatising

i do have orange tailed loaches, and even with there color they are not dyed. but there are red tailed, oranges tail.
a pic can be helpful. but if they are oranged tailed botia, then you don't need anything special. i just left them in a tank and they grew, the largest being around 7-8 inches.

I think what you have is Botia modesta(Orange Fin Loach or Red Tailed Botia). They grow about 7-9 inches and can be territorial, Id say minimum 55 gal.

we know that is what he is, he is quite pale in body with a dull yellow tail.
how big could we let him get without rehousing him?

now had the loach a month and seen him only 3 times, i know they are nocturnal but even in very limited light he is very shy and stays in his rock, but so far im happy to say there are no signsof the horror stories you read about this fish and the 4 serpae tetra he shares a tank with are not bothered by him at all.

i have a botia modesta too aent they great and mine sofar isnt treitorial, or shy loves bein with all the corys, but, does hide when i come around sometimes, only had him a few days, and saw him eat last night, i was told they grew 12 inches im planning on it being the centrpiece of my 75 gallon in a bit, and sence they r like clown loaches, does that mean they r slow growing too? mine is like 3 inches a beautiful blue and bright fins, and the lable said that he wasnt dyed so far there isnt a mean bone in his little body but i do hope to get him some friends soon

Mean but beautiful fish, often kept with Malawi cichlids because of their temperament and will eat kill anything that will fit in their mouths. Need to be in a school, and territorial. Make a good addition to bigger tanks, but keep cichlids for the top that are as big as the Botia and can handle themselves. Therefore, with this combination you end up with an 125 gal.

I have a red tail botia about six inches long in a 70 gallon tank. He is a wonderful fish with great character but quite territorial and aggressive, although I don't think he can do much damage to my other fish.

I think a 15 gallon is too small, and agree that he would need at least 55 gallons.
