Zebra oto?! I saw them for the first time today - they're so pretty! They're shaped just like a regular oto and have black and white stripes! Has anyone else seen them?

(And they were 32.99 each!)

ya they are cool little buggers, but as you noticed in the price you can expect to pay a pretty penny for these guys. they are quite rare

Here's another thread about zebra otos.

Apparently, the price you saw them for is not all that uncommon.

I can get them for $4 each... I was going to buy some, but I didn't have any more room in my tank. Although if there were "zebra corys", I'd certainly do what I could to make room.

What's interesting about the zebra otos is that they have only recently (within the past few months) been given a real scientific name, Otocinclus cocama. Before that, they were known simply as Otocinclus sp, despite that they had been known by scientists for years and are obviously a distinct species.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Nice picture of one at http://www.geocities.com/mikefjacobs/zebraoto5.jpg . My local fish store got several of them in a few months ago -- nice-looking, although their black stripes seemed slightly paler than in the picture. I don't remember their exact price, but it was in the very reasonable single digits and they sold out almost immediately. (I didn't get any, though, because at the time I was wrestling with one of the periodic epidemics that keep gettting into the library tank that I maintain and it didn't seem fair.) They certainly have a future.

$4 each? WOW!

Zebra Otocinclus are still horrifically expensive here in the UK. £30 each. Which at today's exchange rates is something like $58 US. Per fish.

If you can get them at $4 each, snap them up, breed them, then ship a batch here to the UK and make a majorfinancial killing!!!

Oh, the jealousy...=)

So, if I understand it correctly, there are several different species of otos, most of which are very difficult to tell apart? And one of these species is the stripey Otocinclus cocama?
