I realise that they are building the dam but that's been happening for a while now, As far as breeding them yes i do agree with you that we should be breeding them, however i think that your statement was pretty harsh to most people, Any one should be entitled to own this or any other fish they see fit, and it should be a case of what people are interested in some people may not have the time to breed these fish as they are easy to breed but extremely time consuming, then there is the financial outlay aswell.
I think each to there own on that count, I intend to breed them if ever I get them however i don't think i should be telling every one else they should be doing the same thing.
There is quite alot involved in breeding them and that decision should be there own to make not one or the other.

Well, I can only hope that if the species becomes any more endangered, sale of them will be banned in the US.

never ever seen one for sale in the UK

dont know if its just in the shops around me or watever.

i would really liek a couple tho, very nice looking fish

may sound a stupid question - but do they setup things like fish sanctuaries(spl?) if they destroy a large area of river/lake?

If plenty of people breed them, I cant fathom why the fish still costs so much...

The reason is that there are only a handful of people breeding them on a regular basis and if you haven't noticed that with the fish hobby that..... if people will pay the price sellers don't lower it. They and will continue to be not a "fad fish " but a novelty one and much desired one at that. I personally feel this is based on more than one fact.... they stay small ( only a handfull of plecos do not that these guy are algae eaters but still ) and the attractiveness of them ( they are very appealing to the eye, I even know people that don't like plecos that think these are "nice looking" *cough*Babel*cough* )

I do believe as more and more are being bred that the price should and will drop.... how much I dunno but the price will drop with time and availablity. Right now there is more than one auction listed on Aquabid starting off at $150 for 3 of them.

Hey...so you mean that i should not buy the zebra pleco???
If i find 2-4 of them for a good price i will buy them.
If i see a fish that i like at the lfs..i will buy it...thats why you have a aquarium right?

I have noticed this summer there was ALOT of home bred ones on aquabid and they are were reasonal as far as zebras go I was seeing them go for less than $85 for one a couple of the auctions and there were a few multiple auctions that averaged out to the $50 - $75 a piece range ( very few but there was a couple unless the bids REALLY went up at the last minute ) but the only ones I have seen at a fish shop were running $150 a piece, my LFS was unable to get any thus far this year. Here is the picture of the one I did see for sale at a shop though.......

I completely agree with what sirbooks posted.
Again, if you don't like buying zebras, it is completely understandable, but who are you to say who can or cannot purchase the fish they like? :-/
Also keep in mind that zebra breeding is not nearly as easy as many other loriicarids such as BNs, and when spawning is successful, often the pair will only breed once or twice, producing anywhere from 10-30 young per batch.

Aquabid has them at 150+ dollars a PIECE, not a pair.

Just seems like an overpriced, overcaught fad fish to me.

Keep in mind that many people can't afford to buy 3-4 pairs of zebra plecos at $100 each. I know I can't afford $600 of fish, and I don't have the money to buy extra tanks for breeding them and taking care of the fry.
Even though their habitat is being dammed up, I don't think they'll all go extinct. Most likely they'll find another place to live, and there are plenty of people that breed them anyways.

Let's not get carried away with our emotions, here. I'm sure none of the people on this site want the zebra plecos to go extinct, but then again, your comments aren't necessary. Ranting about something that we cannot change is just not cool.

Your right, lets all buy our single zebra plecos that we have no intention of breeding.

Then, once they are extinct, we can all scratch our heads. Hoora!

It doesn't matter. They are damming the river the zebras are native in so, bye bye zebra pleco's.

Do everyone a favor, if your not buying at least 3-4 pairs to breed them, don't buy them.

You guys want to think yourselves lucky, The are illegal here in Australia, however they are available and fetching prices of between $1,000 & $1,200.

I've actually just finished a report for DEH to have them added to the Australian Import List. Don't know if it will be successful though.

They were $85 before the ban. $45-65 were prices one would find when zebra plecs were more common (last year), but the rapid decline in population caused by overfishing caused their prices to skyrocket. As of yet prices haven't risen much if any from the recent ban.

The ones they sell here stay at around 90 dollars in price, and even then it's a bit high. Since the banning of zebra exports from Brazil, the price, originally about 45-65 dollars has taken a jump to sub 100 dollar prices.
