Hello,
How many discus could I put in a 55 gallon aquarium.
It has to have an adult common pleco and preferablly a school of rummynose tetras.

Thanking you in advance

Stephane,
You can easily have 5 to 7 adult (6"-8" discus is a 55 gallon. If you choose to start with smaller fish, you can have 11 to 13 (2"-3" discus.

Rummynose tetras may be problematic. Their preferred temperature range is 73 to 79F while discus prefer temperatures above 82F and my tanks are run at 85F. The rummynose will be OK but mortality may increase. Another choice for a discus tank would be cardinal tetras or gold tetras. I had gold tetras that successfully spawned in a discus community tank.

The common plecostomus (Hypostymus? Ancistrus?) may be a good tankmate. However, the fish is a catch-all for all kinds of sucker mouth catfish, many of the species can grow very large. Some species have been known to develop a taste for the slimecoat on discus. Another choice may be the bristlenose plecostomus, actually ancistrus.

The tank would easily accomodate a dozen or more cardinals. Do establish your dither fish before adding discus.

Discus are a social fish for cichlids, the minimum that you should have is five.

Hello,
I found out that my pleco is a "commom pleco".
Anyways, could I have the following in a 55 gallon aquarium?

-1 common pleco
-1 blue ram
-1 gold ram
-12 lemon tetras
-2 tangarine dream discus
-1 pigeon blood discus
-2 others that I can't remember

Would that be overcrowded?

Thank You

Stephane

The stated stocking should not be a problem for the 55 gallon although you stated that the pleco was becoming too large for your smaller tank. As these sucker mouth fish age they often become more omnivorous and less dependent on algae. Watch for this behavior as you feed the fish. It will also appreciate wood for its digestion.

You do want to maintain a strong water change ethic with this tank. Think of a minimum water change of 30% every other day. Of course if that is the minimum water change then more is better like 30% each day!

Look into a Python at your LFS or at WalMart. You will love its convenience!

Less always works... more fish is often a problem. I like the gold tets as a dither fish, they are small enough that they won't disturb the slower moving discus and a great schooling fish. You may even bump the number to a dozen.
