Im not worried about the polypterus. I did ask Toirtis about it not too long ago and it should be fine.

I think Calvus would do fine with frontosas. If you are concerned then add them at the same time or shortly after the frontosas are put in.
I keep synodontis eupterus with my frontosas. BN plecs also do fine with them, just have a small piece of drift wood to fulfill their dietary requirements.
I did have them with e.blues, moori and red empress at one stage but the e.blues and moori were taking up most of the tank (a 180g!) so I rehoused them. They were originally put in there to make the tank look fuller, just 6 one inch fronties look kinda strange in a 180g tank!

You think thats small?? I've seen full grown 16" males kept with 3" electric yellows. I keep my colony with 1 inch brichardi, and the alpha is 6".

Everyplace i looked said 5". I think 6" may be too small but who knows. My LFS has an inkfin in thats about 4" but i dont want to risk it. If I came across a 6" one i might try it.

Calvus actually get 6"...thats not that small...

Calvus just grows really slow, so maybe you only saw juveniles.

Although I like them, Calvus would be way too small. Compressiceps would work well, and I will look into those neos. Thanks.

Theres a number of fish that would work. Calvus, compressiceps, certain neolamprologus that do not fit the mouths of the frontosa (helianthus, brichardi, daffodils, leleupi, etc). Theres a large selection of bottom feeders, certain plecos, and synodontis.

Also most haps will work, even though they are from different lakes. I've kept peacocks and electric yellows with mine.

"i dont know if the poly would go with frontosa. there is a forum on cichlid-forum.com just for frontosa. also unless you buy adults it would be about 4 years till they could breed"

Full grown frontosas and full grown polys wont matter.

As long as the frontosas you buy are about 3-4", i doubt the poly can touch them.

It takes about 3 years for frontosas to grow into breeding size (sometimes it varies).

I've seen polys kept with some small electric yellows and it worked fine.

I need some ideas on how to stock my 180g. It will be an african tank. There will defenitly be a polypterus in there so i cant keep any of the smaller cichlid species. I was thinking of some Moorei, Electric Blues, maybe some compressiceps. I really like the Frontosa but Im not sure if i want to go that route.

If and when the time comes to look out for fry, i have a 29g i use as a holding tank. It is setup like a normal african tank and will hold fry quite nicely for quite some time. Loosing the polypterus is not an option

My frontosa are really really peaceful compared to some other fish I've kept. Generally, the Frontosa keep to themselves.

In that tank, a good sized colony would work, around 10 will fit, or less if you want to keep some other fish.

Compressiceps work fine with frontosa, and the other cichlids you named would also work with the Frontosa in that large tank.

The thing I'm worried about is the polypterus. I've went to someone's house and the owner said that his ornate bichir was famous for eating all the fry after they have been released by his Frontosa and Electric Yellows, so you might want to watch out.

The frontosa should get along with medium sized fish. Generally I find them peaceful with anything too big to be eaten. In your sized tank, they should be fine.

I know for a while Lindy had frontosas, Cyrtocara moori and Red Empress in her 180 gallon tank. She sent me some pics and they were awesome.

Will frontosa get along ok with some of the mid-sized africans, like moorei?
