Okay guys my tank is going through a change I want to start a planted aquarium with a few amozon swords (echinodorus), dwarf hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula)and Pygmy Chain Sword (Echinodorus tenellus), As you can see Amozon theme. After months of research (8 months), I am ready to make the step. Now for the question. 63g Tank (4ft in length) and i want to put a school of angels (babies so there's less chance of aggresiveness) that will share with a sail fin plec(5". I am thinking of getting six angels. Any ideas on how many i could keep? Obviously they will grow big so I am taking that into consideration.

If you are planning to breed these I think personally I would start with 16 juv, and as they mature and pair up I would thin it to just 3 pair. 6 full grown angels in a 65 gal tank should fill it up nicely, and this gives you some room for some smaller splashes of color.

Ha, kinda funny, I'm planning a similar 65 gal. tank. I'm not going with the biotope setup, but I have a 9 inch pleco that needs a large home with plants he won't rip up, so I'm getting a bunch of driftwood for anubias and he's going to share his tank with 6 angels, too.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I would get 6 Angels & let them pair off & then choose your 2 pairs & give the other 2 away or put them in a seperate tank.

I have to agree with Jason...get your 6 and let them pair off, and in a 63 gallon 2 pairs will be more than enough...just don't forget that Angels can become really territorial when it is spawning time, and will try to attack anyone else in the tank that is involved...

I'm not sure what kind of splashes of color you are thinking about, but keep in mind that neons are an angels natural supper in the wild:#( which i hate to think about because I have always thought a tank of neon tetras and angels would be fabulous

But if you are going to have the egglayers anyways, add some corries to the bottom, you will simply love themjust be sure to get some that are at least 2 inches in size, you wouldn't want the angels to use the smaller corries as lunch heidi

I got 6 juveniles and ended up with 2 mating pairs. What luck! They do get very territorial when they lay eggs but have never hurt any of the others. My problem is having any survive. I have removed all but the parents and they ate the swimmers. I have removed the swimmers and they did not make it. I have left them be and still no luck. On the other hand my Severums bred successfully the 1st try The angel tank is so impressive though...great fish!

Great guys thanks for the Tips. I have also talk to my local fish store and they reckon up to 8-10 grown will be alright but i dont know about that many?? I would love to keep 8, it would be great. I have kept a pair of angels before with a pair of severums but the severums prooved to be more than territorial in the tank. But now keeping an angel only tank is the thing for me. They just so cool there shape and majestic nature can only be topped by the Discus in my opinion.

I had three breeding pairs in a 90 and it was definitely one breeding pair too many. There was no neutral territory in the tank. The "extra" unpaired angelfish posed no problem. The trouble was that the pairs' spawning territories overlapped. After I sold off one of the three pairs, there was a little neutral territory and the stress level in the tank subsided to a reasonably sustainable level.

I would start with 6-8 juvinilles and plan on keeping one or two pairs and maybe a few unpaired fish.

Black neons can work well with angels, if you start with jumbo sized tetras and small angels. Rummynose are another nice choice. Or dwarf neon rainbowfish.

That's interesting even with that amount of sapce still experienced territory disputes, hmmm something to think about. I would like to keep as many but again the more room the happier the fish. I will try to keep eight juvies and see how I go

Your mileage may vary. My dominant breeding pair was incredible. The female literally sat on the egg clutch day and night while the male patrolled the "border". Even when I totally blacked out the tank at dusk using beach towels (hoping the loaches or bristlenose would eat the spawn under the cover of total darkness) they kept the eggs/wigglers safe. They were VERY protective parents. Highly motivated.

In comparison, the second pair was far less aggressive. They did not defend nearly as vigorously or efectively and would lose their spawns overnight or earlier.

Also, my 90 is 2w*2d*3l feet, (originally a reef tank) so does not offer as much horizontal territory as a shallower tank of the same volume.

I tend to overstock but in the case of potentially breeding cichlids I'd stay on the safe side and try to go with less.

It also depends on what look you are going for. Do you basically want an angel breeding tanks or are you looking for a more typical setup with some schooling fish? I keep angels with neons and have never had problems; I always buy my angels very young though. Others have had the same luck, while some people say the combination is definitely a no-no. There are plenty of other schooling fish you could have though.

As well as your plec either a group of cories or loaches would be nice for the bottom.

Good luck and keep us posted on how the tank is proceeding

I am not really fussed in terms of breeding angels, if they do breed it's a bonus but relly I want a tank where the angels are the focus. some shoaling fish would be great. I heard the same about angels and neons where some have the luck of keeping them with angels and other not so lucky. So far I've hit dead end with the refurnishment I've lost the spare tank (My Father gave it away ]:| )oh well it's gonna wait now for a bit hopefully by the end of July. I will keep in touch about the tank.
