I just started a new aquarium. I got it well planted and some of my older fish were put in which are Kuhli loaches and algae eaters. The tank is about 400 litres / little less than 100 U.S. Gallons.

I wanted to know if I can put different variety of Angel fish together. I remember in the past I had black Angel fish mixed with the Golden vairety and they really fought it out. So am confused.....

Thanks
Ulysses

People forget that angels are basically cichlids, and although not as bad as some , can be territorial. Oddly enough some of the worst fighting my angels did was between a yellow and and a black (both female!). Its not always clear what causes fighting in angels, they certainly do seem to take irrational dislikings to each other occasionally, not based on sex or even territory, but then equally a lot of people experience zero hostility too.

I think in general its better not to overcrowd them, and give them visual barriers. If you can avoid it, dont get too many males, and try and keep even numbers of fish. If you are buying the angels from the same source try watching them for a bit, and dont buy any hyper aggressive ones. Aside from that you never really know how theyre gonna be until youve got them home, and personalities can change with the tank.Species has probably got less to do with it than individual fish's moods.Ive seen angels of the same species fight it out all the same.

I would agree as they can become very possessive of their own little area. Give them plenty of space and tall plants where they can call their own. This does not mean there will not be a rogue fish developing trying to be the boss of the tank. If this does happen I would remove it and replace it with another Angel.

Angels will fight no matter what colour they are. As stated above, they are Cichlids & like their own territory. Just try to have long Plants, so they can hide a bit.
