I am wondering if putting Severums and Firemouth cichlids in a tank together is a good idea regardless of tank size. I am interested in both these fish but I want to make sure that I am making the right decision in making them tank mates. They would be going into a 90 Gal. If it is a good mix what would be the maximum amount of each fish I could put in the tank? Thanks.

I would say it is not a good mix, it can even be deadly! The FireMouth will harass the severums, even though theyre bigger. I dunno abouit tank size, but i have heard that the FMs arent too friendly.

I am not exactly sure but you should probably wait for someone who has had this fish, and has experiences.

It could be done in a tank as large as a 90 gal, sevvies are fairly laid back, but at fully adult size , actually a more powerful fighter than a firemouth, and TBH mine have ignored each other, but dont forget , firemouths go for anything with a red blaze near the chin and mouth, its instinctive, so youd never put them with jewel cichlids for example, and if you choose a severum bred for colour that happens to be quite red around the face, that could start problems.

Start with a much bigger severum than the firemouth and it might well work out. If the firemouth is bigger than the sevvy, it will try to bully it though, and young sevvies can be shy and will wane, so always have the sevvy bigger. An adult severum is much more strident than a youngster.

I wouldnt recommend it as a combo for anything much smaller than a 90 gal though, theyd need the territorial space. Much less than that and a firemouth will try to be dominant, and a big severum wont be putting up with too much of that. It wont be an instant fight to the death, but fins will be getting raggy and fish depressed.
