Bolivian Butterfly Cichlid

Thank you to all those who assisted me in a previous thread re Rams.

I purchased two Bolivian Butterfly Cichlids today and was informed by the owner of Aqu they were not Rams , but Chilids.

Both are about 1&1/2 ins and seemed they to be a pair in the shop tank. Cost $8.50 previous Aqu $11

Now can some one far more Chliclid experience that I have please clear this up, or confuse me more.

I will take a photo as soon as I can of then.

Keith

Bolivian Butterlfy Cichlid is one of the common names for Microgeophagus Altispinosa. Another name for them is Bolivian Ram.

Have fun, Mike

To add further to what Mike said, even the common ram (gold/german/blue) is a cichlid. Regular rams and bolivian rams are very closely related - they're dwarf earth eaters.

Better have that owner start reading here on fishprofiles!
All Rams are Cichlids. Common names tend to get everybody mixed up. There are two species of Rams, but lots of 'common' names! German/Blue Rams are usually M. ramirezi, and Bolivian/Ruby Clown/Ruby Crown Cichlids are most likely M. altispinosa. I've seen Butterfly Cichlids used for both species.

Yes, all cichlids are rams. You have most likely picked up a bolivian ram. Quite a bit tougher than german rams. ANd get slightly bigger. Suprised they costed you that they cost around 4 here.

Just want to point out that not all Cichlids are Rams. I think Fish1 knows that, but like I said, it gets confusing!
Some more confusing thoughts for the day: all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares; all cactus are succulents, but not all succulents are cactus. Anybody have anymore?

Now that I think about it, not all rams are cichlids, some are ovine in nature , and they look funny stuffed into an aquarium...

Now that I think of it, Big E, all rams are sheep, but not all sheep are rams! Oh wait, some rams are goats, aren't they?! If this thread go on much longer, I'm going to get a little rammy myself. How about all Rams are Dodges, but not all Dodges are...
