Get bolivians. The are super easy to keep. I love my 2 males. Heres a good article about them. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/microgeophagus_altispinosa.php
If you want a super small cichlid look for a tangaykin shelldweller called multis or neolamprolougus multifaciatus. Look for any type of shelldweller. You can have a colony of them in a 12g.

well you cant really afford to be picky with cichlids when u have a 12 gallon tank . Why dont you just save up a little money and get yourself a 35 gallon or better yet a 55 and get your self some mbuna they will breed for you i promise. or get yourself a 20 gallon and get a pair of convicts.Buts if you dont want to all of that try some shelldwellers

cheapest route i can recommend is getting a 20g long tank. you can fit SO much more in this tank compared to a 10g. a pair of any dwarf species (kribs, apistogramma, ect.) would fit it perfectly and they all for the most part breed easily.

could also have a shellie tank in a 20g long. a small rock dwellign tank like Julis would be a good species tank and breeding would come easily. unfortently these ya wont find in a petsmart because they arnt bread and butter fish. You will however more then likely find kribs on the shelf.

You know just because its not on the shelf they maybe willing to speciel order something for you. Petco refuses to do this for me (different location may have different results)but Petsmart said they would. The only downfall to this is they are both chain stores and they both get thier fish from wholesalers. The quality and all around health will be less then what can be found online or specialty store.

anyway in short.. get a 20g long. this tank will open countless options for ya and makeing it alot easier.

would also be enough room for 6 small rams to pair off in as long as you keep up with water changes. would also be plenty big for 2 pairs of blue rams if enough plant life (real or fake) was in the tank.

Bolivian Rams are very very common and you should be able to get them at petsmart.
Ask a manager they can probably make sure some come in
for you.
Males and females differ little when young.
Sometimes though in a tank full of them, you will be able to distinguish differences if you watch them for a little while, then pick 2 that you think look the most different and you will probably end up with a pair.
Sometimes fish will pair off in the pet store too, so watch for breeding behaviour such as displaying, and 2 fish who stick close together.

some people just enjoy being able to make thier fish happy enough that they breed and takeing care of the little ones. i got 2 larger tanks full of cichlids and im also to the point where i just want a species tank to watch the breeding interaction and parenting.

the question was for the OP. i know why most people (including myself) do it or have done it. just want to know why this particular person is so bent on breeding something.

I am with you acei. A few alarm bells are ringing with the original post. Namely haste and limited access/resources (ie has to be petsmart).

People who breed fish are usually experienced and have a number of setups and are willing to expand to more tanks to adequately care for the fry. This person said must go into 12g. Then what, do they have a setup for raising fry?

What will you do with the fry? What's the rush?

'kay just saw this post:
.i had a 360 gallon tank and i had to sell it , becuz i was getting lazy on water changes and my father told me it had to go...

Lazy on the water changes? Well you shouldn't be getting an even more complex set up if you are not willing to put in the time/effort. You may get away with a smaller tank because your dad doesn't know that smaller tanks require MORE changes and attention than big ones but the fry will not be fooled. They will die in poor water conditions. And the more sensitive fish will also die.

I think you should concentrate on happy and healthy tanks before you try and breed. And as some of our friends above said.... if your fish are happy they will breed anyway.

exactly what i was thinking....just keep a couple fish alive for a couple years and when you have more money and room for tanks, then you may be able to get a breeding setup going. there is more to breeding fish than you think. my recommendation is too do as much research as possible. ask other breeders what they do to be successful at it. you may be surprised at how much it can actually cost to have a decent breeding setup. you need more of everything. more heaters, more tanks, more food, more chemicals (if you are into that kind of thing), more time! it isnt as easy as setting up a 12 gallon tank and letting them breed. best of luck to you and i hope it all works out.

no liverbearers and no danios or anything no tetras must be a big fish...

What do you class as a big fish?

In general big fish and 12g tanks do not mix.

That is why you buy 6 and then let 2 pair off. This a standard practice in cichlid breeding.
