that depends on a lot of things such as the tank size, temperament of the individual fish, temperature of the tank, number of hiding places etc.

Jack Dempseys can interbreed with convicts. What do you mean by a tree? Also you might want to get another cave. BTW the female may be nipped often so feel free to quarantine her if attacked by the male.

Put the female in a seperate tank or use a tank divider so the male can't get next to her.

that will keep ur male from killing ur female, given he is aggressive.

i haven't found a problem with small females and larger males, but again every fish is different.

are u talking about a non-established pair?

for an established pair, my convicts turn white and black, usually my convicts are grey and black, also the female and male can be seen fanning the eggs, and they should breed every 20 days or so, which reminds me, my convicts bred again yesterday.

for my non-established pairs, they will usually chase away my other young convicts from an area where they decided they are going to lay their eggs.

not sure by bump, my males are smaller, so that might be why they dont have a head bump,

but by hump, do u mean head hump like a frontosa male will get.

Water changes keep your nitrates low which is good for the fish. Combin that with a good food, space and they shoud grow well.

You may get away with something fast like Giant Danios or Rainbows. Con's get pretty agressive when its baby time.
