Hello,

I purchased a flamingo cichlid a few months ago from the LFS? It was yellow-flagged as a cautionary fish but not intolerant of others (red flagged).

I put him in a semi agressive Southy tank and he is growing quite rapidly and become extremely agressive towards the other fish.

As there is no information on this site about a flamingo, does anyone no anything about these fish?

Could it be this fish?

If so, you have yourself a midas cichlid.

Here is FP's profile of the fish.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Doing a quick google search says the scientific name is Cichlasoma Citrinellum which is a Midas. Your lfs doesn't know what they are talking about if they said they were not aggresive. They are one of the meanest fish around.

The picture of the midas looks very similar to the fish that I have except for the bump on it's forehead which I assume develops with maturity.

That would probably explain why he is being a jerk.

Are there any differences between a Midas and a Flamingo or is a Flamingo just another name for a Midas?

Flamingo is just another name for it. and yes, most cichlids that have bumps on their heads (like Frontosa for example) develop them with maturity.

If you think he's bad now, he is going to wreak havoc on your aquarium when he gets even bigger. and he gets 12 inches long...how big is your tank? If it's anything less than 75 gallons you will have to return him anyway.

My tank is 70 gallons and well stocked, but does have a lot of caves and hiding spots.

He is about 5 inches now and always chasing the other cichlids in the tank, especially the jewels.

Jewels and a Midas will not get along! >.<

Jewels are agressive as it is, if you don't get rid of the Midas, he may very well kill your jewels and your jewels as agressive as they are will TRY to fight back.
