I am just curious, not planning anything at the current time, but in a heavily filtered, well planted 75g tank, how many Discus could live in there?
Would it matter if any were breeding pairs?
Thanks.

Well, it would be planted with Asian Ambulia (Limnophilia Aquatica its called now i guess), Cabomba, Jungle Val, Spiral Val, Anubias, and Lilaeopsis as ground cover. With driftwood and rockery.
I was just thinking it would be nice to have say 3-4 pairs of different colored Discus in one tank. I have a Turqoise pair as you probably know, but I saw a beautiful pair of these fire red ones that I think are fabulous.
I think it would look great: 1 pair Turqoise, 1 pair Red, 1 Pair Snow White
What do you think? Perhaps my next tank? I am getting a really high paying job this summer, so I may be able to swing a matching 75g to go with my new 75g community.

That would be a wonderful tank, sneaky_pete. 3 pairs of Discus with different colours & lots of plants. Just plan it well & when you have enough money, go for it.

Hi,

The number of discus you want to house is really up to you. I make this statement on an article that I read from Jack Wattley which goes like: The number of discus that you can house varies on how often you do water changes. A 55g tank can house 4 adult discus with light water changes, but the same take can house 10 discus with QUALITY water and frequent water changes.

So it is up to you, if you are prepared to do frequent water changes then the 8 you want will be fine, but if you intend to stick to a weekly change then I would only house 6.

Breeding pairs are ok in an community tank but they will not raise a clutch. If you intend to breed keep them seperate.

The plants you have chosen are all fine, but dont over do the rocks as sometimes discus injure themselves on the rocks, IMO stick to the driftwood and plants.
