What would be the ideal setup for discus i love these fish and would like to know what it takes to keep them happy and healthy. It would be a while before i could afford to get them but would like advice so i know what size of tank to save for(im in college maybe ill just not buy books for a quarter that would give me about a 400 dollar headstart hehe j/k). also what fish could go with them? i know they are picky about water quality which is ok since im in water change mode all the time with the bettas.

just off the top of my head, a ph around or below 7, medium to soft water, weekly water changes, a variaty of good foods.

discus need about 10 gallons of water per fish so it depends on how many you want to keep. I would say 55g at the smallest, try for 75g of more.

tank mates:
most tetra's (cardinal work nicely)
dwarf cichlids (rams are another good one)
some people say corry's work well, others say they don't like the heat, i am going to have clow loaches.

my suggestion is to buy a couple of books on discus and then ask questions after you have learned everything from the books.

Babe,

Check out SimplyDiscus.com and DiscusAsAHobby.com. Lots of great information on discus with libraries and beginner sections in their forums. Members are also a source for reasonably priced fish.

I like the suggestion of the 55, take your time and poke around garage salesa for the tank, stand and top. It is much less expensive than buying new. Friend just picked up two 30 gallon tanks with a double stand and tops for $30!
