I wouldn't use store bought feeders...period. Too much of a chance for diseases and parasites. It will be much better in the long run to feed breed them yourself.

Also, keep in mind that feeding your oscar a bunch of feeders before you leave will foul the water considerably. First, oscars are messy eaters anyway. Feeders are a messy food because as the oscar eats them, scales and other small particles of the feeder will be released through the oscar's gills. these leftover particles will stay in the gravel most likely causing an ammonia spike. should this happen, you won't be home to do a massive water change that would be needed to keep the parameters in line. there would be a good chance you might come home to a dead oscar and extremely foul water.

your best bet is to power feed the oscar a day or 2 before you leave. the night before leaving, do a 50% water change and the oscar will be fine for a week to 10 days. when you get back you can power feed him again with feeders or other live foods such as earthworms, crayfish or crickets, and then do another 50% water change the next day.

sweet i just bought the SAME EXACT one as you and i love mine. Also i did try Stick Pellets with mine and it seems to be doing it okay and not clogging, i have noticed though that it will not drop as many sticks as flakes even if the meter is all the way up for the sticks as it will only at about 1/4 of the way up.but it should be fine as he really needs nothing well we are on Vaca because he can go over a week w/o food but i want him to eat something.

I have been told that automatic feeders work best with flake food.

I have a "daily double" that I use with flake to provide supplemental feeding on a growout tank. It adds food 2* per day at 12 hour intervals. I think its great.

Before going way on vacation, you must make sure the fish will eat the flake the feeder will provide and test to ensure the amount of flake delivered per feeding is appropriate (models I've seen allow for the dose to be adjusted). Run it for a few days to make sure its working correctly before heading off on vaction. Hope you have a great one!

How long will you be away?

I'd do a large water change after you feed him and before you leave if I were you. That will help insure the water params will stay in check while you're gone.

He is more likely to be ok if you feed him normally or a bit extra for a few days before you leave and then leave him nothing, or at the most a couple of guppies. Leaving a lot of food in the tank is a recipe for a water quality disaster, which is MUCH more likely to kill or hurt him.

hi, i was wondering if it would be okay to treat a tank for parasites if i have guppies, guppy fry,and corydoras in it. i was wondering this because soon im going to FL on VACATIONand i need something for my oscar to eat. note he usually eats the adult guppies but as they are in short supply (only 3) and the babies wont grow to adult size in 3 weeks i need to go to PetCo. and get some goldies, and i dont really trust petco`s feeders as they have parasites and my O` got sick from this before. So here is my question-

1.would it be okay to quarentine the goldfish w/the guppies, and cory, and fry?
2.would it be okay to treat the goldies in the same tank with the guppies, cories, and fry.(im mostly worried about the fry.)

Please reply as soon as possible as i go on Vacation in 3 weeks and want to quarantine the goldfish for atleast 1 week, if not two.

Cichlid Kid, how long are you going on vacation for? Your fish would be okay without food for a little over a week.
If you are going to buy some feeders, and are certain that they have parasites then treat them in a tank by themselves. Treating fish that are not sick can in the long run make fish sick. What signs are you seeing that make you believe these fish/feeders have parasites?

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

you guys are being dumb and stupid all i wanted was to know if it would harm the guppies or cories but i guess not as you said they would only get sick from the goldies.
and i dont really see the goldendojo as a reliable person to go buy as he discorages feeding oscars live food such as fish,in another forum.
god im a 14 yr old kid i just want help.

"is is it okay to treat the goldfish for parasites with the fry and other fish in the same tank."

If you want some sick cories and guppies, go for it. Just use a bucket with an airstone or sponge filter.

Oscars can go weeks w/o food, you're better off saving our time and money by just filling him up with pellets.

your oscar doesn't need to eat live food and they should only be feed live fish 2 time a month. depending on how long your going to be gone. if its less than a week then your oscar should be fine without food
